Pet Day Explanation

In our classroom our task was to write an explanation about pet day. Not sure what pet day is? Read my explanation below...

Pet day is an annual event held at Awahono School, Grey Valley. It usually happens in early term 4 which is normally spring. This is because of the time of year and season. It happens then because it is a time when all the lambs, calves and any other animal you can think of that is born.

Children from rooms 1, 2, 5 and 6 create a pet project (a creation that has a lot of information on their pet) based on the animal they are bringing. Even if they are unable to bring a pet they do a pet project based on an animal they have at home or an animal that they like. The pet projects are displayed in their classroom.

Children can bring any animal they like, as long as it is tame, safe and not going to bite anyone or another animal. Every year a range of different animals attend pet day. Last year there were even ducks. On the day, each type of animal that arrives has a set place to be. Normally cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds are in a classroom and animals such as dogs, horses, calves/cows, goats and sheep are somewhere outdoors on the side of the field.

If you bring a pet you and your pet get judged. How does this work you may ask? Well, there are a couple of judges that judge a group of animals. Say you bring a dog, someone will being going around with a clipboard judging the owners of the dogs on how they take care of their animal and how much they know about it. They ask questions such as…

“What do you do to care for it?”
On the day, their are also fun workshops. Some of these included vege Critter and Decorating Cupcakes. These are some activities that are very cool and exciting. Plus… you get to eat the cupcakes that you decorate!

Usually after before or after the workshops there is a barbeque lunch. That is a time that parents who have came and children who have brought money can buy sausages and drinks.

After that there is the prize giving. Children receive awards for participating in pet day. Some children who bring pets and get scored by the judges receive a bag full of things for their animal or for their pet project. Children also get rewarded for their effort and behaviour in the workshops that they entered.

To me pet day is definitely something to look forward to. I love creating a pet project and finding out more information about the type of animal that I did my pet project on. It is also very fun to go around the school looking at pet projects and looking at all the pets that arrive.

In conclusion, pet day is a event that children at Awahono School Grey Valley look forward to. It is a fun filled day that brings smiles to everyone’s face. Especially the ones eating their decorated cupcakes! -Yum!
